Booktok is a marketplace for used books, operated by Goodir Technology. By using it you agree to what is on this page. If you do not, please do not use the site.
1. What Booktok is, and what it is not
Booktok connects people who want to buy, sell or swap books, and holds the buyer’s money safely while the book is in transit. We are not the seller. The contract for the book is between the two people trading; we hold the money, keep the record, and decide disputes.
2. Your account
- You must be at least 13 to use Booktok, and old enough to enter a contract where you live.
- One person, one account. Keep your password to yourself.
- Everything you write or upload must be yours to publish.
- We may suspend an account that is used for fraud, harassment, or to sell something that is not a book. Suspension is reversible; write to us if you think it is wrong.
3. How money is held
When you buy, your money is taken at the moment you order and held by Booktok. It is released to the seller only after you confirm the book arrived, or after the arrival window described below has passed.
There is no automatic payout: a person here sends the money, by hand, once an order is settled. That normally happens within a few working days.
All prices are in the currency shown on the listing. We do not convert between currencies.
4. Deadlines
- An unpaid order is cancelled after 30 minutes and the copies go back on sale. Nothing is charged.
- The seller has 3 days to dispatch. If they do not, the order expires and you are refunded.
- The seller states an expected arrival date when they dispatch, up to 21 days out. You have that date plus 3 days to confirm the book arrived or to raise a claim.
- If you do nothing, the order confirms itself at the end of that window and the seller is paid. This is not a second person agreeing on your behalf — it is the clock, and it exists so that a seller who did their part is not left unpaid forever.
5. If something goes wrong
You can raise a claim while an order is in transit or after it has arrived but before it is settled. Raising one stops the clock: nothing is released until a person here has looked at it.
We decide from the photographs of the copy as listed, whatever evidence both sides supply, the messages between you, and your trading history. We can refund the buyer in full, release to the seller in full, or split the amount. That decision is final on our side, and it does not affect any rights you have in law.
Booktok does not insure a parcel. If a book is genuinely lost in transit we will decide the claim on the evidence like any other; we do not undertake to cover the loss. Books here are inexpensive and an unlimited undertaking of that kind is not one we can honestly make.
6. Selling
- Describe the copy honestly. The condition you state is what a claim is judged against.
- Photograph the actual copy — the front, the back, the spine and the pages. These are what a buyer decides on and what we look at in a dispute.
- Dispatch within 3 days, and give an arrival date you believe.
- You may not list anything that is not a book, anything counterfeit, or anything you do not own.
7. Swaps
A swap is books for books, and either side may propose one. If a cash difference is agreed, it is held in escrow exactly like a purchase. Both parties post their own book and both confirm what arrives.
8. Fees
Booktok may charge a fee per copy sold, deducted from the seller’s payout and never added to the buyer’s price. The rate in force when you place an order is fixed for that order — a later change never re-prices a trade already under way. The current rate is shown to sellers on their own dashboard. We waive the fee on any order we had to adjudicate.
9. Reviews
A buyer may review the seller once a book has arrived. Reviews are permanent and public. We remove one only if it is abusive or if it identifies somebody.
10. Your content
What you write and photograph stays yours. By posting it you allow us to display it on Booktok for as long as your listing is up, and to keep it where it forms part of the record of a trade — see the privacy policy for what that means when an account is erased.
11. Availability
We aim to keep Booktok running, and we do not promise it will never be down. Money already held in escrow is unaffected by an outage.
12. Liability
Booktok is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, our liability to you for anything arising out of a trade is limited to the amount held in escrow for that trade. Nothing here limits liability for fraud or for anything that cannot be limited by law.
13. Ending it
You can ask us to erase your account at any time from your security settings. Orders already in progress must be finished first. See our data deletion page.
14. Changes
We may change these terms. Material changes are announced on the site, and they never apply retrospectively to an order already placed.
